In addition to the abundant avian population, the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is home to 25 species of mammals, including river otters and minks, 24 species of reptiles, and 5 species of amphibians.

Avon NC has been an influential village along the NC coast from the early colonial period.  Originally densely covered with live oaks, this Hatteras village was an influential boat-building capital in the late 1800s.
